First Time Well Owner Information
Welcome to the world of owning your own private well and pump system. There are a number of advantages to having your own private water system. They can give you years of dependable service when properly maintained. The best part is that you never get a monthly water bill. The following information will give you a basic knowledge of some of the things that could occur with your new system.
Bacterial Testing
It is the responsibility of the homeowner to make sure their water supply is safe and free of contamination. Every precaution is taken during the drilling and pump installation process to minimize this possibility. You should have your water tested before you begin to use it. The El Paso County Health Department will test your water for $15. You can pick up a sample bottle at their facility on Union street, follow the instruction on how to collect the sample and then return the sample to them Monday through Thursday. You can then call for the results the following day after 11 A.M. If your test results do show contamination give us a call at 719-495-2912 for chlorination options.

Dirty or Sandy Water
It is not unusual for new well systems to produce water containing dirt or debris. Sometimes this happens because the well is not quite fully developed, meaning that everything down the well has not quite settled in to place yet. This problem is usually easily remedied by letting the water run free flowing for a period of time. In other words, find a place outside where running water will do no harm, turn it on all the way (no sprinklers) and let it run. It may take as long as 24 or 36 hours to clean up the water or it may only take an hour or two. You should periodically run some of the water into a light colored bucket or something similar, let it settle and see if any debris remains. Occasionally some wells will produce sand. This can become a serious problem if not taken care of right away. There are several ways to deal with this problem, if you notice sand in your water please give us a call.

Low Producing Wells
Wells that produce less than five gallons per minute would generally be considered low producers. With this type of well you will probably need to do some adapting as to the way you use your water. As a rule, this should be an adequate amount of water to go about your daily routine inside your house. However, if your well permit allows outside use you will need to be careful not to overuse your water supply. In most cases, low producing wells will have electronic pump protection installed to turn the pump off for a predetermined amount of time if water runs low in the well. The amount of time the pump is turned off is based on the recovery rate of the well.

In some cases low producing wells will require a cistern system to store water for more consistent use. If your system has a cistern keep in mind that this does not mean you will have unlimited use of your water. Cistern systems obviously have more equipment and require more monitoring and maintenance.

Running toilets or leaky faucets are often the cause of many problems with low producing systems. It doesn't take long for one of these problems to drain your cistern and or well and leave you without water.

If you do experience a problem, or just have some questions,
please give us a call at Barnhart Pump.
